This will show you how to add a sitemap to Google webmaster tools using a plugin called Better WordPress Google XML Sitemaps.
A sitemap is a powerful SEO tool that allows you to confirm that your posts, pages and images are properly indexed.
Webmaster tools lets you track your server and domain status, check on any indexing problems, review search keywords as well as some basic analytics.
How to add a sitemap to Google webmaster tools
1. Setup and verify your Google webmaster tools account.
2. Install the Better WordPress Google XML Sitemaps plugin.
Navigate to Plugins >> Add New and enter ‘Better WordPress Google XML Sitemaps’ into the search field.
After activating the plugin, go to BWP GXS >> Sitemap Statistics.
3. Build the sitemap for your site.
Click on the sitemapindex link to build the sitemap.
All the default settings for this plugin are fine for general use.
4. Submit your sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools.
Go back to your Webmaster tools dashboard, select the website profile that we previously verified in step 1 and then click on the Sitemaps link.
Now click the Add/Test Sitemap button and enter ‘sitemap.xml’ into the field that opens up.
NOTE: If you’re using the sitemap module inside the SEO for WordPress by Yoast plugin you will need to enter ‘sitemap_index.xml’ instead.
Click the Submit Sitemap button.
5. View your report in Webmaster Tools.
You should see something like:
From now on the sitemap is updated automatically whenever you publish a new post or page. This means you can have total confidence that Google is indexing every page that’s important on your WordPress site.
