This will show you an easy way to rename files in WordPress using the Media Rename plugin.
Why would you want to do this?
If you’ve uploaded files to your media library named something like “6.jpg” this makes it very hard to find when you’re searching the media library in WordPress.
This also makes the process of naming the images title and alt-text field that search engines use more difficult as well.
This plugin allows you to:
- Rename multiple files and titles inside the WordPress media library
- Automatically re-link those files inside all posts and pages
How to rename files in WordPress
1. Install the Media Rename plugin.
Navigate to Plugins >> Add New and enter “Media Rename” into the search field and install the plugin.
After activation, visit Media >> Library to review your media files.
2. Rename the files in the media library.
Select the entries you want to change by ticking the boxes on the left, then adjust the file names using relevant keywords.
Click the Bulk Actions drop-down and choose either Rename or Rename & Retitle and click the Apply button.
The plugin will rename the file and title as well as relink the image within any posts it’s attached to.
Editing images for SEO
Clicking the Edit link for any image or media file will allow you to edit the title, description, caption and the alt-text that is used for SEO.
If it is an image you can also click the Edit Image button to perform some common editing tasks.
NOTE: If you’re looking for a way to re-process the size and quality of images in your media library you will need to use the Smush.it plugin.
